World Food Day, North America
As World Food Day was held on Oct.9th, we were assigned to introduce some problems related to food in class. My task was to do research on food in North America. My other classmates would do research on other regions of the world like Africa, Asia and Europe, so I'm looking forward for theirs' too.
When I imagine food that is eaten in North America, it's mostly pizza, hotdogs or hamburgers and so on. Other than those, I have the image of Mexican food, burritos and nachos, but my other partner was probably going to do about Mexican food so I will do my report on food in the United States. I've never been to Canada, so I can't imagine what sort of food they're having.
Before this research, I thought that compared to poor, developing countries, United States won't have such serious problems. But throughout this research, I found out that there were a lot that I can't list them all up, so I would like to introduce one that I thought was interesting.
One problem that food in the United States face is its' unhealthiness. Healthday News reports that the standard American diet is the root of the obesity epidemic and many of its associated diseases. Also, it reports that it's not just that the Americans eat too much, which they do, but it's also what they eat that's unhealthy: fat, salt and ultra processed foods. We all know that American food is unhealthy, so this news is no surprise to the majority of people, and we can all imagine it easily.
I believe that the problem here is not just eating too much or it's unhealthiness, but that the Americans aren't much of aware of what they eat and their poor knowledge towards food. Americans believe that pizza is a vegetable and even the congress has affirmed that pizza is a vegetable and the tomato sauce on pizza is enough for American politicians to define it and allow it to be served as a vegetable in school lunch programs across the US. Pizza is definitely no vegetable and therefore this idea needs to be thrown away.
As a result, I think that American schools need to teach their students what is good and bad for health and stop promoting false ideas related to food. I believe that that would help improve the American's diet.
